Revalidation

Complete 2 of the following requirements:

(a) complete 50 hours of flight instruction during the period of validity. If the privileges to instruct for the IR are to be revalidated, 10 of these hours shall be flight instruction for an IR, and shall have been completed within the last 12 months preceding the expiry of the FI certificate (see notes 2, 3, 4)

(b) attend an instructor refresher seminar within the 3 year validity period

(c) pass an assessment of competence within 12 months preceding instructor certificate expiry (see notes 1, 5)

An assessment of competence shall be included as one of the requirements at every alternate revalidation

When an assessment of competence is used for revalidation/renewal of an instructor certificate, it should be completed as the final item (see note 6). If the applicant fails to achieve a pass in the assessment before the expiry date of the instructor certificate he/she shall not exercise the privileges of that certificate until the assessment has successfully been completed

Notes:
1. An assessment of competence must be included as part of the revalidation requirements at every alternate revalidation
2. The 10 hours instrument instruction is not required if you teach only for the UK IMC rating / IR (Restricted)
3. The 10 hours IR instruction can be completed in either in a SE or ME class/type if both SE and ME instructional privileges are held
4. Hours flown as an examiner during skill tests or proficiency checks shall be credited in full towards revalidation requirements for all instructor certificates held
5. Holders of both SE and ME instructional privileges do not need to complete two separate assessments of competence. Either a flight in a SE or ME aeroplane will be acceptable. The class/type not flown will be examined by oral questions on the ground
6. If you need to complete an Assessment of Competence then it should be done last in accordance with FCL.1030(ii)**

FCL.1030 When conducting skill tests, proficiency checks and assessments of competence, examiners shall:
(i) ensure that communication with the applicant can be established without language barriers
(ii) verify that the applicant complies with all the qualification, training and experience requirements in Part FCL for the issue, revalidation or renewal of the licence, rating or certificate for which the skill test, proficiency check or assessment of competence is taken
(iii) make the applicant aware of the consequences of providing incomplete, inaccurate or false information related to their training and flight experience

**Notwithstanding FCL.1030(ii), for UK instructors the UK CAA will accept the completion of the assessment of competence and seminar in any order

Renewal

Complete both of the following requirements within 12 months preceding instructor certificate renewal:

(a) attend an instructor refresher seminar

(b) pass an assessment of competence (see notes 1, 2)

Notes:
1. Holders of both SE and ME instructional privileges do not need to complete two separate assessments of competence. Either a flight in a SE or ME class/type will be acceptable. The class/type not flown will be examined by oral questions on the ground
2. You should complete the Seminar before the Assessment of Competence in accordance with FCL.1030(ii)

**Notwithstanding the above, for UK instructors the UK CAA will accept the completion of the assessment of competence and seminar in any order

It is an interactive programme and is designed such that you gain the maximum benefit from your time at the seminar. You are required to attend all sessions of the seminar in order to qualify for the Certificate of Attendance and if relevant the revalidation / renewal signature on your instructor certificate. The subjects covered include:

  • Flight Safety
  • Standardisation of instructional techniques
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Threat Error Management (TEM)
  • Instrument Flying
  • Teaching pilots with disabilities

  • Multi-engine
  • Forced Landings
  • Best Practice

Administration

You will be sent an information package (or you may download it from the link at the top of this page) which is designed to give you all the information you require in order to fully prepare for the seminar. A name badge and a workbook will be given to you on arrival

What must I bring?
Please bring all of the following items irrespective of whether you are renewing or revalidating your instructor certificate

  • Personal flying logbook(s) showing:
    • instructional experience, if required for revalidation
    • assessmnet of competence, if completed
    • if renewing after a long lay off bring logbooks showing previous instructional experience
  • Licence(s) - bring all licences EASA, JAA, UK, etc
    • if you are renewing after a long lay off please bring all licence(s) old and new - it could save you money!
    • please ensure that your current licence only contains current and valid pages and that all the old pages and certificates are removed prior to attending the seminar. This will make the task of checking your licence much easier
  • Photographic identification e.g. passport, airline ID, etc
  • Completed Revalidation or Renewal of Instructor Certificate Form (SRG1135)
  • Completed questionnaire(s)/form(s) as applicable

Note: Even if you only require a seminar certificate please bring all the items requested above as we have a duty of care to check all your licence(s) and/or logbook(s)

In addition, you may find it useful to refer to your own notes during the syndicate sessions particularly when preparing the short lesson (maximum 15 minutes). It is also worth thinking about what sort of topic you may wish to cover but the final decision will be up to your syndicate as a whole. The lesson will be presented as a syndicate to the other delegates/staff. It is strongly recommended that you bring the following materials with you:

  • Pens, pencils and paper to take notes / prepare a lesson
  • Pens for use on OHP transparency, white board and flip chart
  • Laptop computer - if you wish to use Power Point for your lesson
  • Instructor course notes / book(s)

The lesson, maximum 15 minutes duration, shall be given by each syndicate in front off the rest of the delegates/staff. Each syndicate will then be debriefed with the emphasis on teaching techniques and technical content. This is your opportunity to pratice your teaching skill and remember it is not a test. A variety of visual aids will be available to you at the venue including:

  • White board and pens
  • Flipchart and pens
  • OHP and screen
  • Transparency film and pens (limited stock)
  • XGA projector for Power Point presentations
  • Aeroplane models

In addition to the above we do have a limited amount of connections which will allow you to run Apple products such as Macbooks and ipads

On completion of the seminar you shall be issued with a Certificate of Attendence which can be placed in your logbook. Should you wish to have your instructor certificate revalidated/renewed you must ensure:

  • You have completed an Revalidation or Renewal of Instructor Certificate Form (SRG1135) (download from www.caa.co.uk) (see note 5)
  • Your licence, class/type rating(s) and medical are valid and current
  • Clear logbook evidence of having:
    • Passed an assessment of competence within 12 months preceding your FI certificate expiry (see note 3)
      OR
    • Completed 50 hours of flight instruction during the period of validity of your instructor certificate. If the privileges to instruct for the IR are to be revalidated, 10 of these hours shall be flight instruction for an IR, and shall have been completed within the last 12 months preceding the expiry of your FI certificate (see notes 1, 2)

Notes:
1. Instructors holding both ME and SE instructional privileges can log the hours in either ME or SE aircraft
2. Not applicable if you only teach for the UK IMC Rating / IR (Restricted)
3. An instructor assessment of competence must be included as one of the options at every alternate revalidation
4. If you hold both Helicopter and Aeroplane instructor ratings you only need to attend one seminar covering either helicopter or fixed wing aspects, your choice
5. If you are renewing (i.e. it has expired) your instructor certificate do not complete section 8 Flying Experience. If you are revalidating by experience, remember that the hours relate to the 3 year and 12 month periods preceding the expiry of your instructor certificate - not preceding the Seminar. If, at the time of the Seminar, you meet the hour’s criteria, then complete section 8. If you don’t yet meet the criteria (e.g. the certificate has 6 months to run and you have only 35 hour’s instruction) leave section 8 blank. As soon as you have the necessary experience, complete section 8 and present the form, with your logbook, to your nearest FIE who can then sign section 12 and the Rating-Certificate of Revalidation page in your license

Logbooks and licences will be taken in at registration on day one and returned at the end of the seminar. Due to the large number of logbooks and licences to be checked in the time allowed instructor certificate revalidation/renewal will only be possible where the completion of the requirements is clearly logged. Therefore, you are strongly advised to bookmark the FI assessment of competence in your logbook before attending the seminar
