General

The Test of English for Aeronautical Communication (TEAC) is a plain English for Aviation language testing system designed to assess the English language proficiency (ELP) of aviation personnel for compliance with ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements

The TEAC is a human interaction test between one candidate and one examiner, and takes approximately 30 minutes. Test tasks are focussed as much as possible on contexts relevant to a candidate's aviation role and experience. It is not a test of operational knowledge, but operational contexts and technical references are used to make sure that the ELP being assessed is appropriate

Tests are produced with aviation professional input, and performances are assessed by 1 aviation professional and 1 language expert. The TEAC complies in all respects with the Test Service Provider requirements contained in ICAO Document 9835 ‘Manual on the implementation of the ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements’, and EASA Part FCL.055 and AMC1, 2 and 3

The TEAC is produced, administered and managed by Lenguax which is both a UK CAA approved ELP Testing Organisation and an approved EASA Language Assessment Body

Administration

It is strongly recommended that you review Notes for Candidates, Test Regulations for Candidates and TEAC Information above prior to the ELP assessment. They are designed to give you all the information you require in order to fully prepare for the ELP assessment.

What must I bring?
Please bring the following items with you to the ELP assessment:

• Pilot / ATCO licence showing your ELP (if applicable)
• Identity document e.g. passport or national identity card (see note 1)

Note 1: This must be the one you registered with when you logged in or created your account. You will not be able to take the test without this identity document

ELP Information

Aeroplane, helicopter, powered-lift and airship pilots required to use radiotelephony shall not exercise the privileges of their licences and ratings unless they have a language proficiency endorsement on their licence in either English or the language used for radio communications involved in the flight. The endorsement shall indicate the language, the proficiency level and the validity date.

The candidate for a language proficiency endorsement shall demonstrate, in accordance with Regulation 1178/2011 Appendix 2, at least an operational level of language proficiency both in the use of phraseologies and plain language. To do so, the candidate shall demonstrate the ability to:

• communicate effectively in voice-only and in face-to-face situations
• communicate on common and work-related topics with accuracy and clarity
• use appropriate communicative strategies to exchange messages and to recognise and resolve misunderstandings in a general or work-related context
• handle successfully the linguistic challenges presented by a complication or unexpected turn of events which occurs within the context of a routine work situation or communicative task with which they are otherwise familiar
• use a dialect or accent which is intelligible to the aeronautical community.
  

Except for pilots who have demonstrated language proficiency at an expert level (level 6), in accordance with Regulation 1178/2011 Appendix 2, the language proficiency endorsement shall be re-evaluated every:

4 years, if the level demonstrated is operational level (level 4)
or
6 years, if the level demonstrated is extended level (level 5)

Specific requirements for holders of a IR, BIR or EIR
Without prejudice to the paragraphs above, holders of a IR, BIR or EIR shall have demonstrated the ability to use the English language at a level which allows them to:

• understand all the information relevant to the accomplishment of all phases of a flight, including flight preparation
• use radio telephony in all phases of flight, including emergency situations
• communicate with other crew members during all phases of flight, including flight preparation

A PDF e-certificate is produced for every assessment and is sent free of charge within 10 working days, however candidates can pay for a quicker service:

• Express service (processing guaranteed within 5 working days) - £25 + VAT (£30)
• Express plus service (processing guaranteed within 3 working days) - £50 + VAT (£60)

Paper certificates (couriered within 10 working days to the TEAC Centre (On-Track Aviation)) - £50 + VAT (£60)

Additional Certificate under a different Lenguax Approval - £75 + VAT (£90)
