There have been no books published on 'How' to examine candidates. The UK CAA and EASA both produced an examiner handbook but these publications did little to explain 'How' to examine The Examiner Manual addresses this issue by giving clear and simple guidance on 'How' to examine for each examiner role. The content is derived from both the military and civilian environments taking the best practice of each and putting them together in a single publication The Examiner Manual is published in a loose leaf format and includes guidance on how to examine Threat Error Management (TEM) on Skill Tests, Proficiency Checks and Assessments of Competence. Part 4 FRTOL Examiner is a specific UK CAA examiner category. This part reflects the updated system of FRTOL examiner training and tresting as well as 'How' to conduct FRTOL examinations
Part 5 Ground Examiner is a specific UK CAA examiner category. As there is no formal training provided for a Ground Examiner the Examiner Manual (Part FCL edition) provides the only source for the trainee to learn 'How' to conduct theoretical knowledge examinations

Alan Newton was born in Cheshire and after leaving College joined the Royal Air Force in 1979. During his 17 years in the Royal Air Force Alan saw operational tours on the Victor during the Falklands Conflict and the VC10 during the Gulf War. He also spent many years as a flying instructor on the Tucano and Jet Provost teaching both ab-initio and qualified pilots gaining an A2 Instructor Category. After leaving the Royal Air Force Alan joined Cathay Pacific Airways. For the next 25 years he flew the Boeing 747 classic, Boeing 747-400 and Boeing 747-8 before leaving in 2021 to work full time at On-Track Aviation |
He is an FRTOL Examiner, Flight Examiner, GR Examiner, Senior Examiner, Flight Instructor Examiner and a Class Rating Examiner on both land and seaplanes and he writes articles for Flight Training News. He also holds FCL.900(c), FCL.1000(c) and Senior Examiner privileges for the Danish CAA [Trafikstyrelsen]. In 2007 Alan was awarded the Chipmunk Trophy by the British Aerobatics Association. In 2014 he received a Master Air Pilot Certificate from the Honourable Company of Air Pilots and in 2015 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Alan is a Director of On-Track Aviation Limited and is the Head of Training Alan was an examiner in the Royal Air Force and is currently an examiner in the civilian world on a variety of aircraft types on which he has accumulated many thousands of hours in the examiner role |
